Painted following a course of study in Hanoi last year, this work moves a misty mountain view across two small glassy surfaces—aiming to recall both the slow heritage craft of Vietnamese lacquerware and the luminous screens of digitally shared information today. (Finally mounted and on a wall :) A Mountain is once again a Mountain, 2025. Lacquer, eggshell and foil on wood diptych, each 15 x 10cm

BLACK.2 continues this week and next, so if you're in the city Thursday, Friday or Saturday please call in.

My work - A Mountain is Once Again a Mountain - presents a misty, scrolling mountain view delivered across three digital LED panels and a diptych of glassy, hand-pulled screenprints.

Part of a larger investigation into digital transfers of memory, identity, and belonging, these works combine experimental print processes with heritage craft techniques. They explore how contemporary information has evolved to become mechanically boundless and increasingly difficult to perceive.

The work's title references a Zen teaching describing how perception can arise in different forms: understanding... confusion... and realisation.

"In the beginning, mountains are mountains and waters are waters; then, mountains are no longer mountains and waters are no longer waters; finally, mountains are once again mountains and waters once again waters".

BLACK.2
Opening reception: Saturday 15 November, 4pm onwards

In this exhibition, black is not absence, but condition. It is a mode of thinking, of making, of being with. It holds within it the contradictions of our time—the saturation of image and the desire for stillness, the visibility of bodies and the persistence of their invisibility. Black.2 traces these currents, revealing black as both limit and beginning: a field where perception deepens, and where the possibility of seeing anew remains open.

I'm excited to be included in BLACK.2 at VOID gallery in the city.

The line up features 9 National and International artists, and will round out the exhibition programming for 2025.

BLACK.2 continues the curatorial premise of the original exhibition staged in 2023: The use of black in contemporary art extends beyond the visual spectrum, transcending into conceptual realms. It becomes a metaphor for the unknown, a space where artists invite viewers to explore, question, and contemplate. The absence of colour becomes a deliberate choice, emphasising the importance of negative space and pushing the boundaries of perception. In essence, contemporary art's relationship with the colour black is dynamic and evolving. It embodies a narrative that extends beyond aesthetics, touching on themes of identity, activism, and the ever-expanding possibilities of artistic expression in a world that demands diversity and a deeper understanding of the human experience.

Please join us at the opening reception
